Out of the five Guthrie boys, only three survived the war.
At the time Edmund Guthrie deserted his youngest brother Owen had already
died from wounds at Shiloh and his brother Frederick was already captured and in a Yankee Prison up north.
Edmund had a wife and three little girls at home.
A good point to ponder on all of the men is what motivated them to turn on "their" army and leave.
At this late date, I would think that Edmund did what was best for his own family.
I know all of this because of your sharing.
