"I believe that the property that John owned before the war (40 acres) was forfeited, which suggest that his widow walked away from it."

After the War the reconstruction government of Arkansas required all landowners to pay their back taxes for the years 1861 to 1865, which the land owners had paid to the Confederate Government. Many people "walked away" because they had no money to pay four years of back taxes at one time.
