D. D. Blackstock was killed at Baker's Creek, Mississippi on May 16, 1863. G. W. Blackstock was killed on June 16, 1863 at Vicksburg. The 56th at that time was occupying a salient on the siege line about 800 yards to the left of the Hall's Ferry Road where the Federals had advance to a position some 275 yards from their position. He was probably killed by a sharpshooter or by artillery fire. Neither are listed among the known buried in Confederate Rest, Vicksburg City Cemetery.
