Jim, sounds like your on the right track with his pension. Currently I'm stuck in a blizzard in Tucmumcari, New Mexico and have limited research access. LOL I used the Morman site "family search" for my source. I would like to look at the 1864 Georgia Census to see if they have him listed but will be unable to until I get back to Georgia. Roland and Rowland are somewhat close in spelling. It was Rowland in the 1880 census that had him being from Troup County and being born in 1848, but Roland on Soldiers and Sailors. Since you probably have found his units I can pull his CMSR at NARA if he has one? Since he appears to be married in the 1880 census his wife may have received a pension starting in 1890 assuming her husband was dead. As you know a person receiving the pension had to apply for it every year. To keep fraud low the questions and proof kept getting harder each year. So the longer the wife received the pension if she survived her husband the more information you might have? I have even seen such questions in Georgia like what is the color of your house? Also it was common for another soldier or soldiers in his unit to swear an oath to vouch for the soldier receiving the pension. You might want to check their names against their CMSR's and see if the roster units dovetail? And as well James W.A. Rowland could have been a witness for someone else?
