Re: James W. Abercrombie Rowland - LaGrange, GA

Hello Allen. I found the re-organized Georgia Militia to be the most frustrating and complicated thing I've ever looked into.

When our book was published I had just figured some of it out and I was rushed and did not have the time to do all the work necessary that needed to be done. As a result the command structure for all the counties is in the book but the number of the Militis Districts I believe were left out. Like this one is the 37th Militaia District and the rest have their own designations.

Since that time I have gone back and put more work into it and completed this information. So I have the complete command structure the way it should be now. The only counties not in that command structure are a few counties in North Georgia that were at that time under Union occupation. The appointments to command are listed in the Georgia State O&R books and are scattered about in them. It took me a year at the State Archives to go throungh hundreds and maybe even thousands of pages to put them together.

What seems to have happened is they had that 1864 Militia census but its not a good indicator of who might have actually been called up if the units did form as many listed in the census joined regular units before that happened. So if the units did form and many did then the rosters were made at that time and many seem to be held in private colloections. Some or these collections were given to the achives but without my command structure I doubt if people would have a clue as to what the units were or how they fit into the militia picture.

The State of Georgia had three designitions for Milita.

1. Militia Reserve - to do all necessary police duty in their several counties and to arrest and turn over to the proper authorities, all deserters from State or Confederate service, and all persons subject to State service,

2. Militia Proper - required to drill or perform any of the military duties required by the State of Georgia

3. Militia Active - Militia turned over to the command of the CSA

The original 12 Militia Georgia Militia Regiments became "Militia Active" and is one of the reason for the re-organization of the Militia Proper and the Militia Reserve.
