Hello Allen, Your question as to the Militia and what I am describing and if they were under the command of Maj. Gen. Gustavus W. Smith is a little complicated. Gustavus W. Smith was in command of the First Division of Georgia Militia. Those are the original 12 regiments turned over to CSA during the Atlanta Campaign. The 1ST Division of Militia thus became "Active Milita" and no longer under the command of the Governor unless he officialy recalled them back to State service which I believe he did when Sherman left the State later.

The re-reorganized Militia or "Reserve" and "Proper" militia where still under the command of the Governor. They would have been called the 2nd Division if they had all been called to service and prepared to have been turned over to the command of this CSA. What happened is the "Militia "Proper" and Reserve" were called up piecemeal for State duty and a few of them actually were sent to help Gustavus W. Smith but the 2ND Division never officially formed and all 2nd Division Militaia sent to the CSA command were under the 1ST Divison Militia command. As far as I am concerned to keep things straight they were 2ND Division Militia.

I really think my publishing days are over. Way too many headachces at my age. Although I do think the work is important to get out there but I just haven't thought about it very much. I've seen so much confusion when it comes to the Militia and especially the re-organized militia and think this would clear some things up for people interested in the subject. I suppose I need to start considering something but I'm short of ideas. What I would like to happen is an ongoing public project to find rosters to fill in the privates that were in them.

I went to your link and the Emanuel County is the way I have it in my book but its hard to say if they used that information or went to the achives and found the information from the State O&R records themselves. If they did not get the information from the State archivers then I would think there is a good chance they may have found the information in my book as I am not aware that it is in any other published work. But I admit I don't keep up with those sorts of things anymore.

However since my book came out and I have gone back and did more work on it I can say this.

The 16TH Military District Georgia Militia consisted of 2 battalions, One battallion was consisted of companies from Johnson and Emanuel Counties and the other battalion consisted of companies from Laurens County. The Laurens County Battalion was under the command of Major W. A. Stanley. Also one other correction is that there were two 1ST comapanies. Not sure if one disbanded or was called into active service. This is how I have them now.
