Mr. Sewell --
In 1864 the usual firearms being issued to Confederate soldiers in 1864 included the British Enfield, cal. 577, the Austrian Lorenz, cal. 54 and the U.S. Springfield, cal. 58. Some Confederate-manufactured weapons patterned after these were also beng issued.
Confedetate cavalry firearms were more varied, but often included those listed above. In addition a mounted command might have carbines, such as the Sharps, captured carbines such as the Burnside, and Confederate manufactures.
The variety of weapons to be supplied and maintained made the life of an ordnance officer quite difficult. Firearms from home would have been a last resort when nothing else could be had.
Pistols and revolvers of all kinds were in short supply, much fewer than most folks imagine.
