Just to clarify (or butt in), the battle did not occur at Ft Scott or Ft Smith. The Union supply train originated at Ft Scott and was en route to Ft Blunt (aka Ft Gibson) on the Ft Scott-Ft Gibson Military Road, more commonly known as the Texas Road or Emigrants Road. The train was parked on the south side of Cabin Creek Crossing (south of present Vinita and immediately north of the community of Pensacola OK) when the Confederates attacked, routed the escort, and captured the train.
