Neil, the pity of it is we don't actually know who is buried there. There are, if memory serves, about 137 bodies buried in that cemetery. There is a monument to the men placed there at the turn of the 20th century by the UCV and the ladies auxillary. Fifteen years ago the base of the monument was beginning to fall apart. The bodies were reburied in the cemetery collected by John Ritchey, son of Mathew H. Ritchey of Newtonia, who had the contract to rebury the men from various fields, many from the Newtonia battlefields, located in SW Missouri. I have researched this over the years and have nailed down about forty names of men from Shelby's, Freemans, Coffee's and other commands killed in action at Newtonia. Those men are buried there; but in which grave only God knows. If we can obtain the post war quarter master records submitted by Ritchey of where the unknowns were removed we can narrow it down further. But obtaining those records are neither cheap or easy.
