I don't think anyone will argue that point howevert Sherman's men did commit war crimes and they were sanctioned by him. I honestly think you are letting Sherman off easy.
Now I'll admit I cannot offer a lot of sourced proof, but I did find a couple of articles online. If you would be interested, I'll look them up and post.
Also I understand there is a book just out that deals with these crimes and more. Before you dismiss these criimes as justtified acts of war, perhaps more reserach should be invested.
