The South many of us grew up with has change it's face in many ways. Some things I miss just for their character and interest. Almost a fixture on any highway into or out of town were the 'shanties' I have an Artist Proof by a New Orleans artist in charcoal that shows one like I remember. The yards swept, chickens wandering around in them, smoke coming from the chimney, tin roofs, whitewashed trees and the quilts hanging on the line. While many associate them with the Negro, they were also very much like some of my GGGrands homes. Bean vines growing up string on the front porch if there was a porch. Now those went from shanty to Jim Walter home, trailer and now, Habitat Houses. Some families are in the same location for generations, the structure has changed.
It's fun to take the old highways and see the sights on any trip. The smaller towns in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and other states have been able to keep the 'charm'.
The changes in this type of picture is very similar to the changes we've seen in our youth and their ideas on our heritage. It's becoming a memory in some old family members conversation but these were very important in that family members life. Mine were refugees after the CW. They left Alabama to come to Florida and ended up with a 'shanty'. Was this an insult to them? No, they were happy to have what they did and they were built by their family. People adjusted to circumstance. It's part of the human condition.
