The main reason I started reading and really trying to learn about it was the lack of real information on my ancestors other than one was "captured at Gettysburg and went to prison" type of thing. I had to look them up, find their units, then learn where they were at a certain date. I was overwhelmed at the places they fought and who they were with at the time. Most of my hero Generals factored in their action. Then it mushroomed. The more I learned, the more I realized I'd been PC brainwashed by the educational system. If I do nothing else in my life worthwhile, I've written all I know for my kids and grands. I hope they keep the info flowing.
Saving what we can of our battlefields and keeping our memorials in public view may just keep it from going away.
