let me offer this examples.

In Jacksonville, Fl. there is an effort being lead by college educator to change the name of Forrest High School. One of his points is that "Forrest murdered hundreds of black women and children at Fort Pillow. " Another college history teacher chimed in and stated "Forrest formed the KKK and so forth" now neither one of these statements are true yet they are made by educated men, respected in the community who teach our children. See where this leads? I believe the same hold true for these message boards and others forms of media. It is a fact, the titles and even the positions carry weight.
