Re: Clarification

Both. Let me explain.

I have been involved in heritage issues for about 15 years or so. First I hate to see any heritage taken down and washed out simply to be replaced with another heritage. To me that is just wrong. I know of the same thing happening in New Orleans, except this time George Washington was being replaced with MLK.

Yes the misrepresentation of the facts is a huge part of my objection. Using actual facts related to the issue. The school is located on Firestone Ave If the school name was changed to Firestone High and logical reason, without the lies etc., used I would have no objection. But it does not end there, the school name is rebels and they have a rebel mascot, flag etc, Dixie is the school song. According to the School Board superintendent, and the school board the flag, mascot and song no longer have a place at the school. These are educated people with degrees in education, yet that make biased statements and decisions like that all the time. You see Jim it just snowballs. These small victories add up, pretty soon they are coming for the Mississippi state flag again, based on lies and misrepresentations that they learned from a college educator in the newspaper.

My position is a educator, or a person in a responsible position, should be required to present the complete facts, with out a biased opinion regardless if he or she agrees with the facts or not.

FYI ---

The building at Vanderbilt was built from funds raised by the UDC.

In Texas they want to remove the Confederate statues and replace them with statues of MLK and Caesar Chavez. I could be wrong but seems like I read these statues were paid for by private funds.

In San Antonia Texas, efforts were being made to change the name of Stonewall High School. Reason given is because Stonewall Jackson was a slave owner and a racist. I did some research and found the highest ranking Mexican in the CSA and offered that name. Sorry but I can't name him now but at any rate the name was used. More research revealed the name came from the stonewalls the early Mexicans had built around their houses.

Now where does this all end up leading to, well LSU educators decided that they needed a building named after Sherman based on what a great leader he was. No mention of how he made Georgia howl. Needless to say I got involved in that issue.

As Jamie pointed out Ole Miss. removing the mascot. What Jamie did not mention is the mascot was a representation of an blind ex-slave who work at the school and was thought of to honor the man. The look is amazingly close except the skin is white.
