Re: Letter about Gen. R. E. Lee
For the most part in the 1950's and 60's the Confederate Army and it leaders particularly Gen. Lee were not as villified as they are today. United States military vehicles of World War II, such as tanks, were named after Generals Lee and Stuart not to mentions U.S. Naval merchant ships and even one of the first 5 Polaris Missle nuclear submarines SSN 604 was the Robert E. Lee. I believe that the others were the George Washington, the Theodore Roosevelt, the Benjamin Franklin, and SSN 605 was the Abraham Lincoln.
