Re: Letter about Gen. R. E. Lee
"Lee could only win in his home state". Brilliant comment. Considering that the latter part of the war for the ANV, and the east in general, was IN VIRGINIA. Grant lost more soldiers in the Overland Campaign than Lee had when it began. Grant had more head of cattle moving with his army at the onset of the Overland Campaign than Lee had effective combatants. You might want to pick up a book and read about The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Slash Church, Hanover Courthouse, etc. Grant was equal the butcher as Sherman. Grant just sent his own men in to die while Sherman destroyed Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of North Carolina with little if any resistance. Sherman was totally taken by surprise at Bentonville by Johnston's pieced together army. Better to leave this discussion while you have any credibility. The ANV was the most feared fighting force ever raised in America. And Grant damn well knew it. He knew that attrition was his only means of winning. The seige around Petersburg lasted a pretty long time. With very little advantage to Grant/Meade until the very end. My ancestors got tired of seeing you sorry assed Yankees. Couldn't kill you all, so we quit. This will never end you know. "Cump" hahahaha. I spit on your grave, civilian murderer.
