that is a backhanded compliment if ever there was one. Not all - or many of Grant's men thought him a butcher. In fact, he was cheered whenever rode by his men. The butcher term was of course a term used by the press. You should read Bonekemper III - A Victor not a Butcher. It will surely enlighten you.
