It was also unfortunate for 10's of thousands of Union soldiers, fighting the Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, etc. His own men knew him as a butcher, but that is indeed what it took for him to defeat the heavily out matched ANV. Grant was cold blooded. He was a Closer. We could never know, but if the Union had a leader comparable to Gen. Lee, then they would likely have prevailed with far fewer casualties.
