Grant was not leading the "Royal Highlanders" or the "King's Own Regiment of foot". He had many officers and men under him who knew the terrain. My goodness, even the Union sutlers knew the terrain as much as the Confederates. This was one fact that the two sides shared knowledge. The weather and environment could be unfamiliar but the military geographical information on both sides was very equal.
