In a recent Civil War Times, or America's Civil War, was an article defending Loring, or at least his intent, in this campaign. The gist of the story was that he got on the wrong side of a rising creek, and, in backtracking his route, used a guide who was unfamiliar with the roads, or lack of them, and this delayed his response until it was too late to help Pemberton. The article also addressed the alleged "bad blood" between Loring and Pemberton as not having an effect on Loring's actions. Stan
