Actually, Forrest's men used a high number of revolvers. They used them from the first regiment he raised through Brice's Crossroads where one of his regiments shattered a Union bayonet charge with revolver fire.

This can be found in Ed Bearss' book on this battle. There's lots of other accounts of his men having pistols as well.
