I suggest Knoxville as one point as this was the path for previous companies organized in Decatur which is where they were "mustered into service." The other choice being Decatur.
I'll take my microfilm rolls for the Athens Post and Knoxville Register to the library tomorrow and see If I can gain more information on their formation.
Many of the Meigs County companies were organized at Decatur whereupon they were forwarded to Knoxville where they were "mustered into service," and eventually formed into a regiment when the required number of companies, usually ten, had arrived.
For instance, Capt. N. J. Lilliard's company left Decatur for Knoxville May 2 marching to Athens where they spent the night at the "Old Grubb House," arriving at Knoxvville May 3, 1861 where they went into camp near the city and mustered into service the same day.
Captain A. F. Boggess' Company was organized about June 1, at Decatur leaving June 12 for Knoxville, and on its arrival was at once mustered into service for a period of twelve months.
Then, there was Captain W. W. Lillard's Cavalry Company (5th Tenn.) which was mustered into service a few days after Capt. Sandusky's, which was mustered into service at Shiloh Church, Meigs County, on July 19, 1862.
As a point of interest, Capt. Sundusky was a dentist by profession and a minister of the Baptist Church, resident of Decatur.
