Mounted Volunteers?

Could someone please help me understand something?
I have found some "family records" of my GGGrandfather. The handwritten notes say that he served with the "First Regiment of Mounted Volunteers" under Middleton E. Johnston. His Capt. was John Camp. If the Mounted Volunteers were under M E Johnston, then wouldn't that be the 14th and not the First? If this was the 14th, why is there NOTHING about them anywhere. The only place I can find anything about M E Johnston is in the Handbook of Texas Online. If you have anything on either of these regiments, my ancestors name was Person Abednigo Davis (maybe Percy) he was a Private from 1862 to 64 as far as I know. Thanks.
