Re: Mounted Volunteers?

Jeff,

According to Sifakis' "Compendium of The Confederate Armies .. Texas" , the 14th Texas Cavalry Regiment was organized in the summer of 1861 and mustered into service at Dallas , Tx in September of 1861. The regiment was dismounted at Little Rock in March or April of 1862. The regiment was reorganized in May of 1862. They were surrendered by Dick Taylor on May 4, 1865. However, along they way they fought mostly as part of Ector's Brigade at Corinth, Ky Campaign, Murfreesboro,Jackson, Vicksburg Campaign, Chicamauga, Meridian Campaign , Atlanta Campaign , Franklin-Nashville Campaign, Mobile and Fort Blakely battles. So, these boys "saw the elephant" , several times. At the beginning of the war, several mounted groups of Texans called themselves The First Texas Mounted Rifles / Volunteers/ Partisan Rangers / Legion , etc. etc. Sifakis lists 13 various mounted groups of Texas who called themselves some variation of the 1st Texas ........" . So , it gets confusing in trying to keep them separate. But if your ancestor served in Col Middleton T. Johnson's outfit, then he was in the 14th Texas Cavalry which probably fought as dismounted cavalry with Ector's Brigade in the CSA Army of Tennessee. For a time the 14th was part of Walker's Texas Division and later they served in French's Division .Hope this helps.
