It was Confederate before it was Union. I know, I'm a year late to get into the discussion. I just found a contract for labor paid to my ancestors for two slave teamsters rented to the Confederate Army from January 4 - March 4. 1862. $70.00 was paid at Brooks Station for the labor. On March 11, 1862 the slaves were collected as was the money owed by Capt. RG Holloway. They all returned home to "Spring Garden" in Caroline Co. VA. Holloway was home on furlough from his post in Richmond. He was an Assistant Surgeon at General Hospital #6. I also found that a Union fort with a mote was build at Brooks Station in 1863/1864. The fort remains can still be seen today on private property. (Forts of Virginia)
