Benjamin's father was named Ambrose... (1807-1870)

The Ambrose West (1830-1864) associated with the 26th Va killed at Petersburg in July 1864 is not the same Ambrose as above.

A side note...... It was not uncommon to have popular names within a given family be recycled along the generations. A name gleaned from a national figure, a grandfather, a popular uncle or so forth, which could repeat the namesake. Sometimes carried down different family lines within the same generation span. Can be a chore to a family researcher finding several people all bearing the same name born within a couple years or less of each other, maybe even still living in the same general area as well. That's actually not rare to find. I always recommend to folks not to stop at the first name match they might come across, and dig further for additional cross checking and confirming data on anyone they might find.

"West" was one of the common surnames in Gloucester Co in that era. However I did not locate any of the West's mentioned in this thread amongst the documented known cemetery rosters in Gloucester itself. They had also scattered around the Northern Neck and Tidewater regions of Virginia by the latter 1800's, early 1900's also. Might have lived and died in Gloucester... but also could have been buried elsewhere where other family members had moved and/or established themselves and started to be buried together in another locality... If you don't find someone buried in the area you know they lived or died at... start tracing other family members and/or their children, where they were living at later... Not uncommon that an elder relative might go live with another family member in the last months or weeks... Not enough length of time to show up on records sometimes... Then might find grandpa buried with other later family members in an area that he himself might have only been a short stay or never have actually lived in.... but his kids or grandkids might have....
