Ross, the 1862 original graves are not in a cemetery, they were scattered in every direction for a least a mile around Camp Nelson in the woods and fields. Some soldiers would dig a grave for their buddy and go back to camp to get his body and when they would return somebody else had placed another body in the grave. So some of the graves would hold more than one soldier. They were dying that often.
I wish what you were saying about the landowner was the case. These original 1862 graves are on a piece of ground that I can't describe for fear of "diggers". The landowner on the other hand dug and sold dirt and gravel from the site for years. No telling how many of the original graves were lost, but some still do remain. The landowner quit digging when his health failed a number of years back. I'm not sure, but I think he has since past. He would not even let anyone take a picture of the site. Any time I drive by the site, I'm afraid to look in fear that the digging has started anew.
