The original headstones were placed there in 1906 when the cemetery was established, by area civil war veterans to keep the 1862 remains from being plowed up. The now present VA headstones were placed in the cemetery in 1982, when the cemetery was restored. I don't think what little remains of each soldier that were recovered in 1905-1906 were buried at the 429 headstones. I think they were buried in a mass grave at the 12-foot obelisk in the center of the cemetery or at another site in the cemetery, that I'm not naming. Maybe only ground penetrating radar could locate.
Don't ask about why the state archeologist has not been brought in for help on the original 1862 grave sites. Been there, done that - talk to several, no help.
