Before the Florida ordinance of secession was passed, Florida troops seized (on Jan. 6, 1861) the Chattahoochee Arsenal, with 500,000 rounds of musket cartridges, 300,000 rifle cartridges, and 50,000 lbs. of gunpowder, but no arms. They also seized Fort Marion, at St. Augustine (formerly the Castle of St. Mark) which was built by the Spaniards more than 100 years before. It also contained an arsenal.

Also, at the top of the forum page there is a book advertised - "Columbus, Georgia 1865" by Charles Misoulia. I know Charles and have read his work. Insofar as the raid by James H. Wilson in March & April of 1865 is concerned Mr. Misoulia is the "go to guy". His superb work is focused on Columbus (Selma is referenced, but not studied in this work), but the coverage of Wilson and his troops as they decended upon Columbus & the Chattahoochee River region surpasses all works on the subject. In another book - by Ms. Maxine Turner - titled "Navy Gray", the story of events along the Chattahoochee/Apalachicola/Flint Rivers is expertly told. It will fill in any answers about the people and events there from start to finish - IMHO, it provides the best description of military life from Columbus South to the blockading ships - throughout the entire war
