I must confess, I am a bit bewildered. I try to keep up on units which fought in the Eastern Kentucky/Southwest Virginia region. At the time of Perryville, the 5th Ky. was in the Eastern part of the state as part of the diversion to keep Federal forces from uniting against Bragg's force. As far as I know, the 5th was intact for the operations I can find no evidence of any company being detached. I do know that at the Battle of Ivy Mountain on Nov. 1, 1861 Co. A was hit pretty hard with 5 dead and an unknown number of wounded and missing. These 5 dead were 50 % of the Confederate dead. Overall Confederate losses were 10 killed, 15 wounded, and 40 missing. I have come up with this and it may help.. The original 5th Ky. was disbanded on Oct. 20, 1862 at Hazel Green and the men given a choice of re-enlisting in the new reorganized regiment or go home. Your company A could be a 2nd Co. A which came into the regiment after the reorganization. Perhaps it was an independant company that joined the 5th after reorganization.This was, after all, after Perryville. I will try to find out just where your Co. A came from. Since the only 2 Kentucky units at Perryville were cavalry I believe it is unlikely that a cavalry company would have transferred to infantry willingly.
