Benjamin A. Talbott. 20 year old Farmer, born in Platte, MO.*, enlisted as a Private in Company I, Gates' Regiment Missouri Cavalry** January 1, 1861 in Green County/January 1, 1862 at Springfield, recorded missing, October 13, 1862 following the battle of Cornith, Miss., deserted November 16, 1862

*Served in Mo. S. G. in Winstons Regt., Steens Div. Was engaged at (over) [Nothing follows]

**This regiment subsequently became the 1st Regiment Missouri Cavalry

His file contains correspondence from the War Department to the Chairman, Oklahoma Board of Pension Commissioners, Oaklahoma City, dated July 17, 1915, "There are no rolls on file in this office for Missouri State Guards. The records show that one B. A. Talbot (name also borne as Benjamin Talbot), Private, Co. I, 1st Missouri Cavalry, C. S. A., enlisted January 1, 1862, and deserted in October, 1862. An undated historical roll shows that he served in Missouri State Guards, in Winston's Regiment, Steen's Division. The records show that John Winston was colonel of the 2nd Infantry, 5th Division Missouri State Guards). No later record found."

A handwritten internal note, dtd. /15/15 records: "No pr. of war record found. Benjamin A. Talbott, 3rd Corpl, Co. E, 8 Battn., Mo. Inf. Enl. Dec. 5, 1862. Roll for Mar. & Apr. 1863, only roll on file, present. (The 8 Bttn Mo Inf. was conl'd with part of Clark's Regt Mo. Inf to form the 9th Regt Mo. Inf by order dated Sept. 30, 1863) Name not found on rolls of any Co. 9th Regt. Mo. Inf. Jan. & Feb., 1864 roll only roll on file for each Co. No pr. of war record found. No connection found between the 8 Battn. Mo Inf & the 1 REgt. Mo. Cav."

Benjamin A. Talbott enlisted as a 3rd Corporal in Company E, Musser's Battalion, Missouri Cavalry** December 5, 1862 at Horsehead, Ark., only shown present on the company muster roll for Mar. & Apr., 1863

**Musser's Battalion Missouri Infantry was also known as the 8th Battalion Missouri Infantry, and was consolidated with Companies A, B, C and H, Clark's Regiment, Missouri Infantry, to form the 9th Regiment Missouri Infantry, in compliance with S. O. No. 171, Headquarters District of Arkansas, dated September 30, 1863. Companies A to F of this Battalion became Companies A, F. G, H, I and K, respectively, 9th Regiment Missouri Infantry.

02 22 1865 Guerrilla operations about Stephenson's Mill, 16 miles southwest of Salem, MO, on the Current River, as bushwackers set fire to, and burn the fort there, in part, for retaliation for the local miller failing to have the quantity of meal ground for 250 rebels they had demanded yesterday. The Yankees plan on killing these boys for committing such a deed. Only one way to deal with guerrillas. 3/22-23/1865.
