In researching the records of the 5th Mo. CSA the period after Marmaduke's 2nd Raid found in the unpublished portion of his order books until the Battle of Helena shows that Shelby allowed several of his officers leave to return to their homes. In the Case of Gordan I have a note in the records indicating he was granted leave to bring his family to Arkansas along with some other men within his command. There were other officers within Shelby's Brigade who were allowed the same purpose. It would also appear that any intelligence gained gave purpose to Shelby's Great Raid in the coming fall some four or five months later. Some of this is supposition, but given the conditions in Missouri in early summer of 1863 it would follow that this was so. Shelby's Brigade by late Spring of 63 was used up and needed much in the way of resources no matter where it came from.
