Hello, I am trying to find more information about my 4th great grandfather. Also, information on Charkles V. Snelling, who was captured with said ancestor. My 4th great grandfather was a seargent in the 5th Missouri Cavalry CSA. Here is an excerpt from his obituary.

In 1862 Mr. Paxton joined the Confederate army and served under Gen. Joe Shelby. In the fall of 1863, while returning home on furlough with Charles V. Snelling, he was taken prisoner by Capt. Brown's company at CLinton, MO. Mr SNelling, who was also taken prisoner, was summarily shot by his captors, but Mr. Paxton's life was spared and he was held as a prisoner of war and sent to the military proson at St. Louis, Mo. Later he and two other prisoners made their escape from the prison by jumping from a window to the pavement below, a distance of 22 feet. After escaping, the crossed the Missouri river by means of a small skiff and then made their way to Illinois where Mr. Paxton remained until the end of the war.
