Bruce:

Your Pat Crockett is without a doubt James Patterson Crockett b 1835 TN died May 29, 1863. He was the son of Robert G Crockett and Mary Vickers. He is found in the 1850 census family 394, Dist 79, St. Clair MO. Sister Nancy J Crockett (13) is also listed as well as Mary M Crockett. Younger brother David B is also found. He is next found in the 1860 census family 786 with wife Susan (nee Love) Crockett and two sons age 4 and 1 in Speedwell Twsp, St. Clair Co, MO.

Cedar County Cemetery Records Vol II lists him as being buried in an unmarked cemetery located on Highway 54, two miles from Cedar Springs, Missouri headstone marked son of RG and Mary b 1835 d 1863.

James P Crockett and David B Crockett were part of a band of bushwackers that have an extensive listing in the Provost Marshall Files.
Other interesting names include George Conant and Isaac Willingham. David B is listed as a Confederate citizen in his pow file age 18.

Apparently captured end of April 1862 they were involved in the Humansville fight against an MSM unit of which Obadiah Smith was recruiting. A loyal citizen named Robert Barnes was robbed by the Crocketts and another by name of Andrew Morton. Crockett's defense was he was acting on orders of one George Conant. Claimed to be a private in Prices army and had corroborating witness S.L. Montgomery who reported Conant was Acting Asst QM. They also had a horse branded as being in Rains Division. Interestingly James Patterson Crockett was acquitted and apparently released. I cannot find a definitive military record for either Crockett.

Indeed George W Conant appears in the Mo SOS files as Commissary Capt. Co C, 2nd Missouri Cav Volunteers. Term ended Dec. 1861. He is a native of Vernon County per his csr on Fold3.

There is a Samuel L Montgomery of Co E 3rd MO Regt Parson's Brigade that is held prisoner at Alton Il for duration of war released in May '65 that ends up in the Confederate Home and dies in 1910.

Issac Willingham is listed in Co I Clark's Regt Missouri Infantry last known disposition Van Buren Ark April 30 1863.
