That Obadiah Smith is the same guy that Bill Marchbanks asked Quantrill's band while they were passing through northbound in the spring of 1863 to assist his men assassinate--which was done. Marchbanks thought the Quantrill men's Union uniforms would make the difference. I wrote about that in the 1863 book. I believe this brief relationship led to Quantrill sending a courier to invite Marchbanks along on the Lawrence raid in August of that year, but not sure. Marchbanks hailed from north Vernon County and operated in Vernon, Bates, and the area, which was a little far to join in west-central Missouri operations, but maybe?
