This thread began with my trying to find out more about Col. B. Frank Gordon since I have in my possession three of his unpublished letters written May-Aug. 1863 that I am transcribing for a friend. I think that at least one of them contains code words. I am no expert on Civil War topics, but I did co-edit "Leaves:The Diary of Elizabeth Meade Ingraham, Rebel Sister of General George Meade," so I know my Mississippi battles and units far better than Missouri history of the time. I do know that the letters' recipient was accused and arrested for spying and acting as a courier within about a year.

Your research is outstanding, and I greatly appreciate your More Generals in Gray, but I haven't been able to see the Colonels book yet since our library doesn't have it. I will order it or get it on ILL as soon as I can. I am very interested in what the colonel was doing in the time period I mentioned. I don't think he was taking time off, but I could be wrong.
