Check the misc citizens files at fold3 and you'll find Nelson Smarr's PM listing at St Joe. His age info fits the Nelsom Smarr of Ralls Co confirmed by 1860 census match. I think this would be ET Smarr's cousin. Thinking birds of a feather flock together and seeing as they were both captured at the same time date and place I assume they were together in the same unit action/group. Looking for military service info came up with the National Park Service info on a Nelson Swall that I can not match to any listing anywhere in Missouri SOS lists nor could I pull anything from fold3 with that last name. I assume (perhaps erroneously) that this is another of the many transcription errors that exist in the online databases. Having looked at thousands of handwritten records of names over the years "W" read as "M" and vice versa is very common. The unit fits the time frame and place of capture as well. So nothing here that is concrete or confirmed with primary source documentation, thus my entry as a good place to start fishing. Nelson is not as common a name as Edward or Thomas so it may be easier to work on his story and then reconnect it to ET.
