This matches his record on the 1860 census of Greene County MS. He was discharged due to physical disability a few days after enlistment. A physical description is attached to his discharge.

A record filed under J W Byrd shows that he worked as a civilian for the Confederate Arsenal at Columbus MS as a wood hauler, Apr 23, 1864. Could be the same man.

Obviously Josiah Byrd could not have been serving with the 9th Mississippi Regt at the same time.
