There is a service file in this regiment for Samuel H Byrd, new Co "E" and J L Byrd, new Co "H". J L Byrd died at Canton MS, May 15, 1862. I find no indication of Josiah Byrd in any Mississippi regiment except as noted in another post.

Disagree on consolidation having no meaning. From our standpoint, a researcher can find a parole record for a soldier who enlisted late in the war. That means no record of the soldier exists with his original regiment. However, the date, place and term of enlistment (plus name of enrolling officer) appears with his consolidated command. Of course it also means the soldier was actually present with his command, since all those who had been absent for various causes were left off consolidated rolls. Quite useful.

General Johnston moved forward with consolidation for military reasons during the first week of April 1865. Lee's army had been forced to evacuate Richmond and was in motion to join Johnston's army. Consolidation of his much reduced regiments helped to make Johnston's army easier to organize, move and manage.
