Interesting information; I look forward to obtaining a copy of your book. It seems to me often the case that soldiers who are simply listed as captured at Gettysburg were actually wounded, and then taken prisoner. I would only add that since this soldier was not listed as being captured on 3 July by Union forces following the charge, then he either made it back to the Confederate lines on his own (for instance with a wound in his arm), or with a little help from a comrade. Another significant category of men who were wounded that day and not captured immediately had been struck during the cannonade preceding the assault, typically by a fragment of shell or shrapnel. I have analyzed Confederate casualties from all units at Gettysburg, and about one in four (roughly 25%) of the wounds were inflicted by artillery fire (in a sample size of over 1,000 soldiers who were identified by name). Incidentally, regarding wounds caused by artillery, it is also true that a solid shot strike was nearly always fatal.
