Mr. Foote was correct. The North was in an economic boom. The war was more of a nuisance than an actual threat to the North. Wagon trains were still going West. California and the Nevada Territory were crawling with miners digging for silver and gold. Here in California the Transcontinental Railroad route was surveyed in 1861 and the first tracks layed in 1863.

The North fought the Civil War not with great tactical and strategic skill but by throwing enough money at it they buried the South in men and equipment. Had the great generals like Lee and Jackson had initially fought for the North the war would have been over in a years time.
