I don't know enough about what he did in the Mexican War to give a comparison but he sure was conflicted--bless his heart. He was very good at training troops. If one takes into account the type of green, inexperienced men and boys he turned into soldiers while in Pensacola he gets an A+. They went on to some tough situations and came through with honor. He remembered those civilians who placed themselves in danger to help his troops during the bombardment of the Navy Yard and Barrancas and honored them. At that time, it seems as if he acted with wisdom and courage.
Maybe it was after that, and the conflict with the other officers that he seemed to show the other side of his personality. Maybe it was his 'other' personality, I'm not qualified to say but something wasn't 'right' in his head. We may not be discussing Bragg at all if he had not been made a field general by his friend, the Prez.
