I don't know enough about what he did in the Mexican War to give a comparison

Well one thing he did was this: field artillery handled by men like Captain Bragg provided mobile and ferocious firepower ALL over the ground during the battle of Buena Vista. Another factor for winning the battle was the V formation, formed by a Colonel Jefferson Davis. You might want to check out the book "Jefferson Davis, American by William J.
