Chase, you are right about the South's early view of the war. And I suspect about our propensity to "settle things" ourselves. In part it was necessary because the minions of thelaw were few and far between. Of course, that did not always matter. John Hunt Morgan killed a man while attending university. He ended up getting away with it; I don't remember the details, but he became a lawyer. Perhaps that sttled him down a little. This was before the war. Of more recent note: A "friend" asked me to hold his car keys once, because he was drunk. When I would not give them back to him until he sobered up, he attacked me with a butcher knife. I broke his knife blade and three of his ribs. He sobered up pretty well after that, so then I returned his keys. Later he thanked me for not letting him drive. LOL Stan
