If Grant of 1864-65 was in charge of the Union Army in the East initially, I would give him two maybe two and a half years. He still would have been up against the best generals in the South. His tactics were not very pretty but he knew how to handle that unwieldy army better than anyone else the Union had.

I always like to play make believe and swap Grant with Lee and see how each would have performed using the others forces. I believe Lee would excell with the Union Army and Grant would be lost trying to run the Confederate Army.
