In my Mississippi vernacular, a carpetbagger refers to a profiteer who appeared after the war to acquire land and other property, or engage in business practices with the distressed population, "price gougers". They acquired this moniker for their style of luggage. A scalawag is a southerner who cooperated with the carpetbagger. I'm interested to know how these terms were applied in other states. John
