How soon would the Southern Government have become just like the oppressive Washington Government?
Southern folk chaffed against the Confederate Conscription Act. Seems to me that was a BIG step in becoming “centralized”. Gov. Vance fought the Davis Government when they tried to control the supply depots, and Mill’s that were in North Carolina. (Read Confederate Industry: Manufactures and Quartermasters in the Civil War)
The temptation was always there for the Davis Government to try to control the individual States populations, resources, and supplies.
