And even the United States abandoned the Republic form of Government under the same necessity of conducting that war. Had Lincoln not been the authoritian he was, he would have lost that war. But in doing that he destroyed the United States as it existed prior to his election. By shutting down newspapers that expressed a decenting view of his policy and arrest even Congressman and persons running for political office who opposed his views The United States certainly was no republic, nor is it even a democracy.
The United States ceased to exist as a Constitutional Government in 1861 and was reformed in the image of Lincolns ideal. That the people exist to serve the unlimited Government and not the a limited Government existing to serve the people. We only have to look at todays headlines to see how that worked out for us.
