I think that this states right thing was the "fly in the ointment" when it came to what they were trying to do. I think it was the states rights thing that gave old Jeff Davis ulcers. Lincoln had to contend with a few newspapers and some in the administration but old Jeff had to contend with Milton of Florida, Vance in North Carolina, Wigfall from Texas, Brown of Georgia and perhaps Brooks from South Carolia to name a few but that is what kept him from being effective. Almost seems in some ways they they wanted him to fail. In my opinion.
