The measles epidemic that took so many men of the 10th Texas Cavalry was from December 1861 to January 1862 and started during the road march from Clarksville Texas to Little Rock and many died enroute. Exposure to the winter weather also took a toll among the casualties. Those men could have been buried anywhere along the way. However, it is written in geneology records that Elijah D.Wyatt died in 1862and is buried in a "Confederate Cemetery" in Little Rock. I found one reference that he was buried in Fort Smith. I believe he died during the march from Texas to Little Rock and is buried somewhere around Little Rock. The 10th Texas Cavalry was in Fort Smith and Little Rock before they were sent to join Ector's Brigade in Tennessee.

Very few of the original 900 recruits of the 10th Texas Cavalry returned home after the war. This made a especially severe personal hardship on their families and a economic hardship in the area in general. That was the reason my great grandparents William E.and Parmelia (Wyatt) Gilmer and five other menmbers of the Wyatt family moved from Coffeeville in Upshur County Texas to the west Texas frontier and settled near Brownwood Texas in 1877. A large exodus from the eastern counties in Texas to the west Texas frontier occured after the war. The migration greatly increased after the Indian problem was over, from 1875 through 1880. In 1879, the "pay as you go" tax reform program was initiated and cheap land became available under the administration of Gov. Oran Milo Roberts. Railroads were given public land for their right-of-way and many struggling families in east Texas preempted small farms on the frontier and took advantage of the tax reform.
